How to Start a Virtual Assistant Business

How to start a virtual assistant business? VA work is one of the few businesses you can genuinely start this week. The hard part is packaging it so clients buy a result, not hours.
What VA services to offer first
Inbox and calendar management, travel, CRM tidying, invoicing, social scheduling, customer email. You almost certainly already do several of these competently. The mistake is offering all of them, a menu of twenty services reads as "I do anything," which is much harder to buy than "I run the inbox and calendar for busy consultants."
Sell retainers, not hours
Hourly VA work punishes you for getting good: the faster you work, the less you earn, and every month resets to zero. A monthly retainer for a defined scope gives you predictable income and gives the client a predictable bill. Start with a small monthly block and grow it once you have proven the value.
Find clients where the overwhelm is
Solo consultants, coaches, agency owners and small e-commerce operators are drowning in admin and know it. Communities where those people already gather beat job boards, where you compete only on price against a global market.
Onboard properly or you will drown
The difference between a calm VA business and a chaotic one is intake. Ask, up front and in writing, what tools they use, what access you need, what "urgent" means to them, and who else you will deal with. Doing this by ad-hoc email is how details get lost in month two.
Get paid without chasing
Invoice on the same day each month, before the work, not after. Retainers bill in advance, that is normal and expected, and it removes the entire category of "chasing last month's money."
